Homemade Item: EASY ITALIAN BREADSTICKS

Home Made Item
EASY ITALIAN BREADSTICKS

Breadsticks are always better fresh from the oven, that is why I like to make them from scratch instead of from a pre-made mix. This recipe is so easy, even the novice baker can complete it successfully. The ingredients in this simple recipe all come from food storage, whether frozen or on your shelf.

Preheat oven at 375°.
Start by proofing your yeast.

SIDE NOTE: I used a stand mixer for this recipe, because I’m lazy, but you could easily make this recipe in a large bowl and knead by hand.

While the yeast is activating, the dry ingredients are mixed together in the bowl of a stand mixer.

The Italian seasoning is added in with the dry ingredients.

SIDE NOTE: If you don’t have Italian seasoning you can make your own by using spices you already have. For this recipe I combined ¼ teaspoon thyme, ¼ teaspoon rosemary, 1 teaspoon parsley, 1 teaspoon oregano, and 1 teaspoon basil.

When the yeast is ready, add it to the dry ingredients. Start mixing on low and once all the ingredients are incorporated, mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes.

The dough should be really sticky and shaggy looking

Leave the dough in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise for 10 minutes.

While the dough is rising, melt the butter in the microwave. Pour the melted butter into a baking sheet and spread it around the entire pan. Let the butter cool slightly.

When the dough is ready, turn it out onto the baking sheet. Using your hands massage the dough to spread it out.

SIDE NOTE: This part was a little frustrating because the dough kept shrinking back to its original shape. Just keep pushing it around and it will eventually spread out. It’s ok if it doesn’t reach the edges of the pan.

Turn the dough over to cover both sides with the melted butter.

SIDE NOTE: This part was really hard to do because the dough is so sticky and stretchy. I found it was easier if you can get two hands under it.

If the dough gets folded over on itself, just pull it slightly and it should unfold.

Spread the dough out with your hands again if the dough shrinks while flipping.

Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into breadstick shapes

Sprinkle the top of the dough with garlic and onion salt.

FUN FACT: Keep an extra salt shaker around for when you need to sprinkle spices on top of something. This will help you get an even distribution. I mixed equal parts of the garlic and onion salt in my shaker and then shook away!

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let rise 10-20 minutes.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown then enjoy while still warm!

Easy Italian Breadsticks

Ingredients

1 package active dry yeast
1 ½ cups water
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 ½ teaspoons Italian seasoning
3 cups flour
½ cup butter
Garlic salt
Onion salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°

Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the water. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes or until foamy.

Mix the salt, flour, and Italian seasoning in the bowl of a stand mixer. When the yeast mixture is ready, add it to the flour mixture and mix or knead for 3 minutes.

Over the bowl and let the dough rise for 10 minutes.

Melt the butter in the microwave and pour into a baking sheet. When the butter cools slightly, spread it around the baking sheet.

When the dough has risen, turn it out into the baking sheet. Using your fingers, spread the dough out into a sheet. The dough will be sticky and it’s ok if it doesn’t reach the edges of the pan. Turn the dough over so both sides are covered in butter.

Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough lengthwise down the center and then perpendicular cuts to make the breadsticks.

Sprinkle the garlic and onion salt over the top of the dough and cover. Let the dough rise for 15 minutes.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
